SUMMARY
Set within the height of the AIDS Crisis and the Tompkins Square Riots protesting the gentrification of Alphabet City, Rent tells the stories of Queer artists bravely reckoning together with how to make meaning and care for each other in defiance of the systemic violence that impacts them.
With ferociously heart-centered resonance and a 90s grunge rock score, this classic musical invites us all to risk everything for what we know is right and, most of all, to measure our lives in love.

SYSTEM DESIGN
This was the first production in the Iris Cantor Theater, NYU's new undergraduate theater. This was also my first musical.
I experienced a lot of growing pains throughout the process and my design decisions.
The Iris Cantor Theater has a default house sound system in place. I laid out the stage speakers for band monitors and playback. We had a 5-person band using the AVIOM system for monitors and talkbacks. Onstage, there were live percussions which I intended to pick up by mic-ing the stage; however, in the end, they were loud enough on their own with some aid from actors' body mics.
On the Yamaha Rivage M5, I learned how to set up the console for actors and band mixing, and for sound effects mixing. This built a foundation for my future projects on the digital console.
As for the stage monitor system, there were decisions I learned not to make again. With lighting and scenic grid trims, my stage monitors had to be quite high up. The coverage was not always the clearest due to speaker choices and placement.
Naturally, with musicals, there was not much playback content to generate. Rather, much of my role is to listen and decide on how the mix sounds in the house. This is frankly a newly developing skill and intuition that I am working on. Much to learn on this matter!
