SUMMARY
"Why am I beginning to feel like I'm on a porch with a
bunch of strangers all of a sudden?"
bunch of strangers all of a sudden?"
On the night of their 20th high school reunion, the self-proclaimed “Multi-Ethnic Reject Group” gathers for the first time in years to pregame the party. As jungle juice and weed flow, they reminisce, wrestle with the fickleness of memory, and try to reconcile who they once were with who they have become. But when one unexpected guest forces a reckoning with the past, the evening takes a haunting, funny, and deeply unsettling turn. Written by Pulitzer Prize winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Appropriate, Purpose), The Comeuppance is a darkly comic meditation on friendship, mortality, and time.

SYSTEM SETUP & DESIGN CONCEPT
In addition to the theater's mains, we added two QSCs in the rears, two QSCs upstage, and two JBL Control 2P practicals. One JBL is behind the porch wall, sourcing as inside Ursula's house; the second JBL is on SR next to the railing, sourcing as the driveway. Both also function as localization for character's phone sounds. The system is connected from QLab to Scarlett 18i20 interface, then to the speakers.
The sound design is split into two worlds, the realism on the porch and the death monologue. The two overlap in texture and language, as Death inhabits the character in real time – and there is no death without life, vice versa. For the naturalistic world, the mains and surrounds build the suburbs and neighborhood activity (birds, bikes, chatter, dogs, etc.)
For the Death world, the element bounces and reverberates around the room (through object movement in QLab 5). Each character has their own Death intro, and textural bed - based on their character's background and their monologue – while still incorporating morphed naturalistic elements. Ursula's Death has drips, wetness, and a void space ambience. Caitlin's Death has beats, repetition, and changes in speed. Paco's
Originally, there was a practical Bluetooth speaker onstage, brought on by an actor - which created a delicious dynamic localization. However, over the duration of rehearsal, the connectivity became unstable, despite the computer being in close range and in open loft booth. After cutting the Bluetooth, the stage system is still able to support tracking sound element.
